Because my wife and I were the only people in the group, this was in effect a private tour and we could have some really quite deep conversations with Roger. I have some knowledge of Buddhism, so it was interesting to hear how the story of the Buddha and Buddhism unfold from the Chinese, rather than the Indian, perspective. Roger told us the story of Buddhism and explained the history of the pagoda itself.

After lunch and a beautifully refined and delicate tea ceremony in a nearby restaurant, we went to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an itself. We found the whole experience deeply moving. We had plenty of time there to marvel at these ancient portraits of real soldiers done in terracotta. Roger gave us a very good account of the history of Xi'an (previously Chang'An) and of the warriors themselves.

Thankfully this was after the mid-autumn festival holiday week, so there were (by China's standards) relatively few visitors. Roger took met us at the hotel and took us to see the utterly amazing Terracotta Warriors. The next day (Tuesday) the rain tipped down.

My wife and I took the bullet train from Tianjin (where we have family) and arrived at Xi'anbei Zhan (North Raliway Station) at about 10:30pm, where Roger, our excellent guide, and our driver for the two tour days met us and took us to our hotel, the Grand Noble, booked for us by China Highlights as part of the tour. We have exchanged photos since my visit and I can not recommend China Highlights, and especially Susan in Xi'an and my driver Chung, more highly. Susan met every request I had with a positive attitude as I was determined to see more than just the usual Western tourist sites.I felt we became great travel companions. It was the visit of a lifetime and I highly recommend China Highlights and especially Susan as a guide if you want to see more than just the usual tourist attractions. The three of us enjoyed lunch together every day and it was great. The driver took us everywhere I wanted to go, even at short notice, with no complaints and like a fellow explorer. Moreover, Susan responded to my every whim and desire to see 'real' China beyond the usual touristic attractions as I wanted a special experience. I was taken to the usual attractions, like the terracotta warriors, and Susan was very knowledgeable and gave me great insights. I had a highly tailored itinerary for my time Xi'an, the Huashan mountains and some outlying villages and very special sites that are 'off the beaten track'. My guide, Susan, and my driver were superb. I travelled on my own and had high demands and expectations for my time in the Shaanxi province. On the forth day Lina put us on our flight to Guilin.

Thanks again to Lina and her driver for giving us a memorable and stress free journey in Xi’an. A bit harder than we anticipated but we managed it. We also made a cycle tour around the top of the old city wall. Lina briefed us on the history and folklore stories about the site and the warriors. Of course the terra-cotta warriors was the highlight of our trip to Xi’an. She also organized that we could have a massage in our room at the hotel and arranged tickets for us to see a live theater show. Lina showed us where we could get a good meal, where the Muslim Market was so that we could go there in our free time.

We had scheduled a free day for ourselves and Lina helped us reorganize our itinerary a little so that we would not be too busy on one day. Our lady driver was waiting and the two of them bought us to our fine hotel and got us settled in. We arrived from Beijing on the bullet train and were met by our smiling guide, Lina.
